Peanut Butter Oreo Dirt Pudding (No-Bake Dessert)

Side by side boxes of peanut butter and regular chocolate sandwich creme cookies by Sobisk sold at the Dollar Tree

One of my favorite budget-friendly pantry finds is a box of Sobisk chocolate sandwich cookies from Dollar Tree. Sobisk sandwich cremes are made in India, and they taste remarkably close to name-brand Oreos. The price is hard to beat!

A while back, I picked up Dollar Tree’s off-brand Peanut Butter Oreos on a whim. To use up the extra cookies, I decided to swap them into my favorite classic no-bake Oreo Dirt Pudding, combining the peanut-butter-creme crushed cookies with chocolate/vanilla pudding and whipped topping.

The result was a sweet twist! While that specific Dollar Tree Oreo isn’t always in stock, you can easily replicate this recipe using name-brand Peanut Butter Oreos, or even regular chocolate sandwich cookies, and mix a dollop of creamy peanut butter straight into the pudding layer.

Step 1: Crush the Sandwich Cookies

For this recipe, you’ll need 36 sandwich creme cookies total. (Here, I used 16 peanut butter cookies and 20 standard sandwich cookies.)
Place all the cookies into a sealable plastic bag, pressing out as much air as possible before closing. Then, start crushing! Use your hands, a rolling pin, or a mallet to crumble them into a mix of fine crumbs and small, chunky pieces.

Once crushed, transfer about a quarter of the cookie crumbs into a small bowl and set it aside—this will serve as your topping later. Keep the rest of the cookies in the bag

Step 2: Mix the Pudding Base

In a large bowl, combine powdered sugar, vanilla extract, cold milk, and two boxes of pudding (one chocolate and one vanilla). A hand mixer works wonders to bring the pudding to its ideal, smooth consistency, but a sturdy spoon or whisk works great, too.

If you really want peanut butter in this dessert but can’t find peanut butter flavored sandwich cookies, you can mix in 1/4 cup of smooth peanut butter while preparing the pudding.

Note: Because this no-bake Oreo dirt pudding is already plenty sweet, the powdered sugar is completely optional!

Step 3: Assemble the Dirt Pudding Layers

To assemble the layers of this delicious dessert, grab a deep container or a classic 9×13 baking dish.

The Cookie Crust: Pour the bag of crushed sandwich cookies evenly across the bottom of the dish.

The Pudding Layer: Pour the pudding mixture over the cookies, smoothing it out evenly. Pro Tip: Use the back of a spoon to gently press or “stab” the pudding down into the cookie layer so the crumbs absorb that moisture as it chills.

The Whipped Topping: Smooth an entire container of thawed whipped topping over the pudding. Do not stir!

The Garnish: Sprinkle the reserved bowl of cookie crumbs evenly over the top.

Step 4: Chill and Serve!

Cover and refrigerate overnight (or for at least 6-8 hours). As it sits, the cookies soften into a cake-like layer, leaving you with a rich, effortless, no-bake dessert!

Once crushed, transfer about a quarter of the cookie crumbs into a small bowl and set it aside as a topping for later. Leave the rest of the crumbs in the bag.
  • In a large bowl, combine powdered sugar, vanilla, cold milk, and two boxes of pudding using a hand mixer or a large spoon.
  • Pour the bag of crushed sandwich cookies evenly across the bottom of the dish, then add the pudding mixture over the cookies, smoothing it out evenly.
  • Smooth an entire container of thawed whipped topping over the pudding. Do not stir. Sprinkle the reserved bowl of cookie crumbs evenly over the top.
  • Cover and refrigerate overnight (or for at least 6-8 hours) before serving.

Notes

  • If you don’t have peanut butter flavored sandwich cookies, you can add 1/4 cup of smooth peanut butter to the pudding mixture.
  • In this recipe, I used Sobisk sandwich cookies both in regular chocolate and peanut butter flavor. Sobisk cookies are a cheaper alternative to Oreos and can be found at the Dollar Tree.
