4-Ingredient Baked Macaroni & Cheese Recipe

Macaroni and cheese is regularly called a comfort food, and there are no arguments in this corner — the pasta is filling, and the sauce is warm and creamy from the combination of butter, milk, and cheese. The most convenient of macaroni meals is the boxed version cooked on the stove top, but there’s something about a homemade baked macaroni and cheese from the oven that goes the extra mile in taste and texture, especially when the dish has a solid golden layer of extra cheese on top. What if I told you there was a way to turn boxed mac and cheese into a 4-ingredient baked macaroni and cheese?

So much cheese! It’s a beautiful thing.

Baked mac and cheese is not something you have to spend a lot of time on. I used to think this way at Christmas when my grandmother’s method of making this comfort food involved a complicated roux with lots of milk and cream and long rigatoni noodles. Witnessing her hard at work preparing this dish was a process to behold! I never dared to try to make it at home, so I opted for boxed macaroni instead — cheese powder and all.

It was my mom who found the boxed macaroni and cheese hack that changed our household forever. Just like with my popular 4-ingredient tuna noodle casserole, keeping the ingredient list tight turned out to be the secret to weeknight perfection.

Deluxe Mac & Cheese Vs. Regular Mac & Cheese

Regular boxed mac and cheese includes a packet of powder to make the sauce, but you have to supply additional ingredients, like butter and milk to add to the macaroni noodles.

Deluxe macaroni and cheese is a larger box of dry pasta with a packet of cheese sauce. Preparation requires only boiling water to cook the pasta. After draining the liquid, the cheese sauce is added to complete the meal.

What You Need For Your Boxed Macaroni and Cheese Hack

I can’t begin to tell you how easy it is to make this cheesy pasta happen! While traditional baked macaroni recipes call for flour, heavy cream, Velveeta blocks, and breadcrumbs, this easy 4-ingredient mac and cheese keeps things beautifully simple with no flour or roux required:

  • 1 box Deluxe Macaroni & Cheese (pasta shells with the liquid cheese pouch)
  • 1 large egg
  • Milk (1.5 to 2 cups depending on your preferred creaminess)
  • Shredded Cheese (sharp cheddar or your favorite meltable blend)

With these basic staples, you can customize this baked macaroni to your liking. Prefer elbow macaroni over shells? That works fine. Want extra sharp cheddar or a Colby-Jack blend? Go for it. You can also toss in optional boxed macaroni and cheese add-ins like dry mustard, paprika, or garlic powder — though I usually stick to salt and black pepper.

How to Make This 4-Ingredient Macaroni Bake

All you have to do is prepare the deluxe macaroni according to the package. Add the egg and milk (it’s best if you whisk them together before adding), then stir it into the warm macaroni and cheese.

Then pour the contents into a greased 2-quart baking dish, top with your favorite shredded cheese, and bake for 20 minutes, or until the top is bubbling and golden.

For extra cheesiness: Mix a handful of shredded cheese directly into the pasta mixture before adding more on top.

For extra creaminess: Adjust your milk ratio—using between 1.5 to 2 cups hits the sweet spot between creamy and structured.

Optional crunch: If you aren’t strictly sticking to four ingredients, a light sprinkle of buttered breadcrumbs on top adds a great classic bake texture.
